Matsuba are solid, metallic-colored koi with a black netting or “pine cone” pattern on the body. Matsuba can display many different body colors, but the black pinecone pattern remains consistent among all Matsuba. Different types of Matsuba include Aka Matsuba (red body with black pine cone pattern), Gin Matsuba (white body with black pattern), Ki Matsuba (yellow body with black pattern) and Orenji Matsuba (orange body with black pattern).
What To Look For
The pine cone pattern on the body of Matsuba is created by scales with dark centers, and edges that display the base or body color of that particular koi. The pattern should repeat uniformly as it spreads back toward the tail.
Ideally, Matsuba should have a clean, blemish-free head that is the same color and tone as the body of the koi. Any blemishes or flaws on the head will detract from the overall beauty of the koi.
