Yamabuki (YAH-mah-BOO-kee) Ogon are usually referred to simply as Yamabuki. The Yamabuki is a solid, metallic yellow-colored koi and is part of a single-colored metallic koi class, the Hikarimuji (hee-KAH-ree-MOO-gee).
Interestingly, the range of translations for Yamabuki (from “mountain blowing gold” to “pale yellow”) parallels the spectrum of yellows it can exhibit. A Yamabuki can range from a light marigold to a lustrous gold, and in some instances the yellow becomes deeper as the koi ages.
Shimmering Gold
Yamabuki are the gold bullion of koi ponds. The reflective golden coloration represents wealth and prosperity in Japanese culture. The Yamabuki’s understated elegance comes from the metallic yellow that contrasts its multi-hued pond mates, making it highly visible and instantly recognizable in any body of water.
For koi enthusiasts looking to add a little variation on the traditional elegance of the Yamabuki to their pond, there are newer, interesting varieties available—like the scaleless Doitsu, the sparkly Gin Rin and longfin butterfly combinations.
Things to Consider
As a single-colored koi, the need for a blemish-free body is most important for a good quality Yamabuki. Any irregularities will be immediately noticeable and will detract from the uniform nature of the single color.
The same criteria applies to the head. It should be clear of different colors and any marks or spots. A “dirty” head is not a desirable trait in a Yamabuki.
A Yamabuki’s fins ideally are all white. However, there can be patches of yellow that fan out from the base (or “knuckles”) of the pectoral fins.
