Just like Kumonryu, the pattern of any single Beni Kumonryu will change completely many times throughout it’s lifespan. The black and red patterns change frequently, while the base white color always remains the same. No one is precisely certain what brings about the change in pattern, although changes in water temperature and pH seem to play an important role. It is common for Beni Kumonryu to change to completely black during the cold winter months, with the white and red patterns emerging during the warmer spring and summer months.
What To Look For
Since Beni Kumonryu will change their pattern many times throughout their lifespan, it is important to consider factors other than pattern when choosing one for your pond. As with all koi, body conformation should be considered first and foremost. Also, beware of any deformities of the pectoral or tail fin, a fault that is common with this variety.
Additionally, pay attention to the depth and quality of the red and black patterns. While the pattern itself will change many times, the quality of the colors will remain more or less constant, giving you a good idea of how the colors will appear in whatever pattern the koi decides to exhibit at any given time.
